Spring in the Islands of Dreams

A “Birdwatcher’s Mecca” – the Isles of Scilly are the most southerly point of the British Isles. The Scillies are a magnet to birdwatchers and although many birders visit in Autumn, Spring is a delightful time to visit these majestically scenic islands and very rewarding for birdwatching, because of their phenomenal record of scarce, rare, and vagrant bird species turning up annually. In spring there are a range of breeding seabirds, including Puffins, Razorbills, Common Guillemots, Shags, Common and Arctic Terns. May is of course a key month for migration and Dotterel, Whimbrel, Greenshank, Purple Sandpiper and Turnstone are fairly common spring shorebird migrants. Passerine movement at this season also includes a fine selection of species that are regular annual transient species, such as Whinchat, Grasshopper Warbler, Lesser Whitethroat, Pied & Spotted Flycatchers. However, the spring migration normally brings an abundance of avian gems from Europe, making Scilly the ideal location for a birding break – Purple Heron, Hoopoe, Bee-eater, Golden Oriole, Red-backed and Woodchat Shrikes occur regularly. A variety of summer breeding visitors is also an important feature in the ornithological calendar and in spring there are usually good numbers of Northern Wheatear, Blackcap, Chiffchaff, Willow, Reed and Sedge Warblers. A Spring ‘Avian Adventure’ to the Isles of Scilly – aptly named the “Isles of Dreams”, offers great birding in a simply wonderful location. Our base on St Mary’s, is the excellent Bell Rock Hotel which offers very comfortable accommodation, good food and is ideally located for catching boats to other islands - two boat trips to other islands are included in the price.
