Photography: Birds, Bears and Landscapes

Eurasian Brown Bear
Slovenia is one of the smallest countries in Europe, located at the meeting point of the Alps, the Adriatic Sea and the Pannonian Plain. It has borders with Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia.
European Bee-eater
With a population of only about two million, it boasts vast forests, rich biodiversity and numerous protected areas and parks. According to the Good Country Index, it is among the most environmentally friendly countries in the world. Nearly 60% of the surface area is covered by forests. In addition there are numerous wetlands.
In spite of the country’s small size a remarkable number of bird species have been recorded and as many as 219 have been found breeding. On this tour, from various hides we will hope for chances to see and photograph species such as Bee-eater, Dipper, Pygmy Owl, Black Grouse, Little Bittern, Great Reed Warbler, Reed Warbler, Night Heron, Little Crake and Great-crested Grebe. There should also be Brown Bear, Fox and Chamois. In addition, there will be great opportunities for landscape photography in a variety of settings.

Day 1 - Arrival
The tour will start in the unspoiled nature of forests in Loški Potok. There, all the photo enthusiasts and adventurers can catch a sight of the Brown Bears and Foxes and create their own new photo collections. You will arrive to the spot around 2:00 pm. This means that you will start your tour with a late lunch and prepare yourself for a first photo session. A photo session with a Bear and/or Fox is for most of us a very special experience. The day will wrap up with a local dinner.

Day 2 - Bear Photo & Cross Cave
After breakfast we will go to visit a Cross Cave, also named Cold Cave under Cross Mountain. This is a cave in Slovenia's Lož Valley. The cave is named after the nearby Holy Cross Church in Podlož. The cave is particularly well known for its chain of over 45 subterranean lakes of emerald green water. This will be a perfect time for some landscape photography. The afternoon is reserved for Bear photography.

Bearded Tit
Day 3 - Bear Photo & Lake Cerknica
On the last day in this region our focus in morning will be on bird photography around Lake Cerknica. This is an intermittent lake in the southern part of the Cerknica Polje, a karst field in Inner Carniola, a region in southwestern Slovenia. The lake is an important wildlife site, especially as a nesting place for many bird species. Botanically, it is distinguished by amphibious plants. It is therefore a part of two Natura 2000 areas of protection. We will finish the day with a Bear photography session in the afternoon.

Day 4 – Race Fishponds
You will be moving towards eastern Slovenia. On your way from Loški Potok to Ormož you will stop in Race. The day will be mostly about birds. We will be using our three hides in the Race area. Due to diversity of hides there will be possibility of photographing lots of different bird species.

Little Owl
Common Cuckoo
Days 5 & 6 - Ormoz Birds & Vine Tour
Ormož in the Ljutomer region is also known as one of the best gastronomic regions. Winemaking has been around this north-eastern part of Slovenia long before the Romans arrived. The wine-growing country of the Ljutomer-Ormož Hills has always offered ideal conditions for the production of white wines. Some rare species found their peace here in between the vineyards. This special place and spectacular landscape will be offering you great photo opportunities across two days. Among the main species we might see on the first day will be the Bee-eater, Hoopoe, Common Cuckoo, Green Woodpecker and Kingfisher. On the next day you will be most of the time in Ormož Basins, a 135-acre manmade wetland that lies within the Drava River ecosystem by the Ormož Lake. It consists of shallow pools with reeds and rushes, surrounded by a flooded forest, a rare reminder of extensive riparian forests in Slovenia. The wetland is of exceptional national and international significance for many endangered bird species. Bird species for photo sessions include: Little Bittern, Great Reed Warbler, Reed Warbler and Night Heron. As it is common in Ormož area we will organize a wine tasting for you. On day 5 you will have an after-dinner tasting of local wines produce by the owner of the accommodation where you will be staying.

Day 7 - Last Day
Your Slovenian experience will wrap up in Ormož with a morning bird photo session and traditional Slovenian lunch.
